Future Here Now: Scarcity brain

💬 Confession: I am a constant victim of scarcity thinking.

Because I grew up in an unstable economic situation (I tell this story in The Local Economy Revolution Has Arrived), the slightest money crunch triggers a panic in my gut that no rational information can override.

💸 Intellectually, I know I’m fine. But throw me a small household budget glitch, and my lizard brain instantly starts screaming that disaster is at the door. 🚪😬

🧩 A therapist once told me this isn’t just “bad thinking” — it’s how my brain wired itself.
A key part of my brain formed in a moment of scarcity, and that wiring still drives my paradigm — even when logic says I’m safe.

📬 Future Here Now is my 3x weekly newsletter exploring emerging trends that will shape the future of our communities and organizations — and what we can do to become Future Ready. 🌍✨

⏳ Historically, scarcity has been the default human condition.
For most of history, life was shaped by disasters, loss, and fear — and our biology evolved accordingly.

😟 That’s why a 12-year-old whose dad lost his job can grow into a 40-something whose stomach knots at an unexpected bill.
We believe in scarcity… because for so long, it was true.

🚫 But here’s the danger: scarcity thinking closes us off from opportunity.
It makes us cling to the familiar — people, places, and solutions — even when the old ways no longer serve us.

💥 In times of rapid change, fear-based reactions can lead us to reject innovation and resist transformation.
No wonder so many organizational change efforts fail — we keep addressing the intellect while ignoring our scarcity-wired lizard brains. 🦎

🌱 Learning to manage our scarcity brain may be one of the most important skills of the coming decade.
To build the future we want, we’ll need to face our fears, rewire our patterns, and move from scarcity to possibility.

💪 The future belongs to those who stop letting fear write the story.

🚀 Let’s do this together.
